Caribbean Shipping Association helping disaster relief efforts

The Caribbean Shipping Association has established a disaster relief fund for member-countries affected during the 2017 hurricane season.

This was revealed by President of the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA), David Jean-Marie, as he addressed this morning’s opening of the association’s 47th Annual General Meeting at the Hilton Barbados Resort.

He commended CSA member countries for their quick response in coming to the aid of Caribbean brothers and sisters by providing supplies, funds, personnel and logistical support.

Jean-Marie said donation envelopes have been distributed to the approximately 350 delegates in Barbados for the conference this week, and the CSA has pledged to match the contributions made as well as to put any surplus from all CSA events towards the relief effort going forward.

“The CSA is fully committed to making its resources available to ensure the complete and speedy recovery from these disasters,” he said.

“These recent disasters have highlighted the vulnerability of Caribbean economies and remind us of the role the Caribbean Shipping Association can play in facilitating shipping and driving efficiency and improving productivity in our respective countries.”

Meanwhile, General Manager of the Caribbean Shipping Association, Fernando Rivera, told the media the devastation caused during this Atlantic hurricane season will shape future considerations by the CSA.

“Because of what has happened throughout the Caribbean, at our next meeting, we will concentrate a lot of our efforts on disaster awareness preparation…you have to learn from bad situations like this one,” he emphasised.
