Saint Lucia has achieved a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games for the first time ever thanks to Levern Spencer.
One of our nation's premier athletes, high jumper Spencer had previously taken the Commonwealth bronze twice at the 2010 Delhi Games (1.88m) and at the 2014 Glasgow Games (1.92m).
But it is Gold Coast Gold in 2018 as Spencer executed a 1.95m jump in her first attempt, defeating Morgan Lake of England who was able to complete a 1.93m jump.
Levern spoke after her victory saying, "It's a really good feeling and I am happy I'm the one making history for my country. In the last two editions of the Commonwealth Games I got bronze so I was determined to work hard this time to win gold and my results today were good enough."
Nicola McDermott of Australia pleased the hometown crown taking the bronze medal with a 1.91m jump.
