Coronavirus: 5 useful tips to help you socially distance
As governments around the world scramble to contain the spread of the Covid-19 virus, we are all newly-acquainted with the term 'social distancing'.
Some of the new restrictions which have quickly become the new norm seem quite intimidating and daunting, turning our daily routines upside down.
But each and every one of us is key to helping contain and limit the coronavirus spread, so we have to follow our government guidelines no matter how disruptive they may seem.
Fortunately, there are many solutions which can help us maintain our productivity levels and keep in touch with the people we love, even in these times of social distancing.
And here are some that might help us during this time:
- Call more, meet less
Telephones are a marvelous thing. Back in the day, people used to dial a number and call the person they had mind. In these times of staying at home, we should all do the same! Increase the number of phone calls to your loved ones anytime you wish to spend time with them; quality time is based on the conversations we have. In this COVID-19 context, it is more important to hear a familiar voice than anything else. Check your cellphone’s provider offers on plans or Top Up, you might be pleasantly surprised.
- Video calls are the new face-to-face
Everyone knows there is no better feeling than giving great news, and seeing the reaction of that special someone. There is also a great feeling when you can see your coworker’s faces during a business meeting. Well, we are lucky enough to have different platforms that enable video conferences such as Microsoft Teams, Skype, and Zoom, among others, that help us keep our working life and our family life up to date. And, if none of the above serves its purpose, we can always use FaceTime or WhatsApp’s video call feature.
- Embrace digital wallets instead of cash
Physical money changes hands frequently and circulates from five to 15 years, which means it picks up many bacteria. In fact, in 2017, the journal PLOS One published a study that found hundreds of species of microorganisms in dollars, including microbes from mouths, DNA from pets, and viruses. Now that the global focus is to decrease the COVID-19 cases, handling cash seems to be a concern. Recently, the World Health Organization urged people to wash their hands right after they touch paper currency, and organizations such as the People’s Bank of China ordered the return of paper currency from areas where cases of the virus were reported. We can use digital wallets or mobile money services to reduce the chances of handling cash. Services such as MyCash in Jamaica, MonCash in Haiti, WiPay in Trinidad and Tobago, among others, can be a solution in finding ways to continue with our day-to-day but reducing the risk of spreading COVID-19.
- Ask for food delivery or pick up, don’t be out and about
We all love to eat, especially food from our favorite restaurants. But many of these have had to close temporarily as the coronavirus restrictions take hold. That said, there are many places which are offering home deliveries and kerbside pick-up, thus allowing us to stay safe while still enjoying our favourite food.
- Keep your phone clean at all times
We use our phones to do many things, from calling to scrolling on IG. Clean your phone as much you can to guarantee that you avoid germs being transmitted. To clean your phone effectively, use soap and water. When doing so, please turn it off, soak a cloth into the soap and water solution and gently rub the surface on the phone, avoiding any openings. Then, with a dry cloth, rub the phone to absorb any water residuals, and then turn your phone back on.
