Six Cuban doctors among a team of 113, who arrived on the island last month to strengthen the island’s health system amid the COVID-19 pandemic, will commence work in Vieux-Fort today, Tuesday, April 21, 2020.

They will be attached to the Vieux-Fort Wellness Centre and the St Jude Hospital.

On Monday, April 20, 2020, they were given a tour of the Vieux-Fort Wellness Centre by a nurse at the Centre.

The doctors were showered with praises for their humanitarian gesture by the Mayor of Vieux-Fort, Orricia Denbow-Bullen and Chairman of the Southern Committee of the Humanistic Solidarity Association for Cuba/St Lucia, Tedburt Thobalds.

“I welcome the ambassador and his team. We are very happy that they have assisted us in improving our health sector,” Denbow-Bullen told Loop News.

She added: “We expect our mortality rate to be very low. I was just reading that Cuba has the lowest mortality rate when it comes to the coronavirus.”

Tedburt Thobalds said: “The assistance given to us by the Cubans is most welcome, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

He said his relationship with Cuba goes back a long way, and that some years ago, he took a civic society group to Cuba which paved the way for the collaboration, especially in the health sector, which the country now enjoys.

He said Cuba has assisted St Lucia in a number of areas, such as with medicines, agriculture and engineers.

According to him, the southern committee of the Humanistic Solidarity Association is playing an active role in forging close ties with the Cubans.

In a brief interview with Cuba’s Ambassador to Saint Lucia, His Excellency Alejandro Simancas Marin said his team is prepared to do its best to improve the health sector of the island.

“We will work together. We are ready to work.”
