ECSC Chief Justice Pereira wishes St Lucia Independence congrats
The Hon. Chief Justice, Dame Janice M. Pereira, DBE,LLD, Justices of Appeal, Judges, Masters, The Magistracy and administrative and support staff of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) join in extending hearty congratulations to the government and people of Saint Lucia on the attainment of their 40th Anniversary of Independence. This is quite an achievement measured on any scale.
The government and people of Saint Lucia have every right to celebrate the 22nd of February, Independence Day, because its rich history and achievements in Health Care, Education, Sports and Culture and Bilateral relations over the last four decades are deserving of accolades. According to Nelson Mandela, "for to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others”. It must be noted that Saint Lucia’s achievements were not built overnight and were certainly not devoid of challenges. However, this is a wonderful opportunity to not only pay the highest tributes to those who made its success possible but also to reflect upon the important contributions of all the founders whose sacrifices have undoubtedly pillared the generations to come.
The beautiful Helen of the West Indies and the Host Country of the Court’s Headquarters, Saint Lucia is the only Island in the Caribbean that can boast of producing two Nobel Laureates in Sir Arthur Lewis for Economics in 1979 and the Hon. Derrick Walcott in 1992 for Literature. A further point of note is that this year marks the 40th anniversary since Sir Arthur Lewis received the coveted award.
As the third pillar of our democracy, the judiciary and the ECSC play an important role in ensuring the social and economic fabric of Saint Lucia remains reliable and protected through the rule of law. Equality before the Law is fundamental to a well-ordered and civilized society and the ECSC will continue to uphold that important third pillar and contribute to the continued growth and development of Saint Lucia for many decades to come.
As Chief Justice, I wish each and every Saint Lucian a happy 40th Anniversary of independence for today and for the rest of the Anniversary year.
