ESSEX V WEST INDIES: Tourists reach 309-8 on opening day

Opener Kraigg Brathwaite, Roston Chase and Jermaine Blackwood scored half centuries as West Indies reached 309 for eight on the opening day of the tourists' two-month tour of England and Ireland on Sunday.
Chase, batting at number five, top scored with 81 from 138 balls before he was bowled by seamer Callum Taylor, who also removed Brathwaite for a patient 61, as he ended the day with two for 33.
Jamaican batsman Blackwood scored 59 from 70 balls, adding 116 with Chase for the fifth wicket.
Shane Dowrich is undefeated on 28 from 37 balls.
The three-day match is the first of three before West Indies start a three-Test series against England at Edgbaston on August 17.
