Man found hanging in Laborie prison cell
A senior police officer has confirmed that a male individual who was in police custody was found hanging in a cell at the Laborie Police Station earlier today, Saturday, December 7, 2019.
The circumstances surrounding the discovery was not disclosed, but an investigation has been launched into the incident.
Saturday's discovery was the second of such a nature.
In October 2013, 22-year-old Chakadan Daniel was found hanging from a cell at the Micoud Police Station two days before he was to make a court appearance to answer to a number of charges inclusive of assaulting a police officer and damaging property.
On December 6, 2018, six officers who were on duty at the Micoud police station at the time of Daniel’s incarceration were brought in for questioning acting on orders of the Director of Public Prosecution Daarsrean Greene.
Greene, prior to being appointed Director of Public Prosecution, represented Daniel's family.
To date, no charges have been laid against the officers, even after a 2015 coroner's inquest ruled Daniel was unlawfully killed.
A post-mortem examination found that Chakadan Daniel died from asphyxia.
