The US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) has given a tropical wave, located over the central Caribbean Sea, a 90 percent chance of development over the next 48 hours to five days

If the storm develops, it will be called Eta.

It will allow 2020 to tie with 2005 in terms of the number of storms in a single season—28.

This will be the first time in recorded history that the seventh letter of the Greek alphabet is used to name a storm.

NHC said the wave is gradually becoming better organised and a tropical depression is expected to form during the next day while the disturbance moves generally westward into the western Caribbean Sea.

The wave is expected to produce heavy rainfall across portions of the ABC Islands and Jamaica this weekend.
