NWU gets long-awaited meeting with Guy Joseph on NHC
NWU Deputy President General Solace Myers spoke with reporters ahead of a long-awaited meeting with Economic Development Minister Guy Joseph earlier this morning, February 25, 2020.
Myers said the meeting "concerned all of the operational issues and environmental challenges we've been experiencing at the NHC for a number of months now... so we really hope we can finally get some sort of resolution and finalization for them."
She said, "we have a huge issue in terms of the occupational health and safety of the staff there that we need to get addressed as soon as possible."
Myers said that a contingent from staff and shop stewards would be participating in the meeting.
She described the meeting as 'really huge' in the context of complaints that the minister was not available or seeking council with the NWU. "At the end of the day he is the line minister, and once you bring the matters before him, he hopefully would have the authority to basically bring finalization and resolution to everything. So we're really pleased that he was able to accept one of the days we proposed and we're very hopeful with the staff to bring some sort of end to this because it's been going on for too long."
On the vacancy of an NHC chairperson, Myers said, "All of that will be brought to the fore. We are aware that Mr Mangal is no longer there. In terms of the official letters, we haven't seen anything as yet so all of that needs to be discussed in terms of the replacement board, in terms of the Managing Director or GM who the staff will report to... all of that needs to be put to rest."
