Prime Minister Allen Chastanet
Prime Minister Allen Chastanet has warned that if St Lucians do not follow the prescribed COVID-19 protocols, catastrophic consequences await the country.
The prime minister spoke with reporters ahead of the National Emergency Management Advisory Committee meeting that was called in response to the indication that community spread of COVID-19 has begun for the first time on island.
Four new cases without a travel history have been recorded recently.
"The consequences to us as a country if every single St Lucian does not exercise these protocols is catastrophic," Chastanet said.
He continued: "The remedy for this problem is the same regardless of how many people are being infected. The remedy is for everyone in St Lucia to exercise the protocols that have been recommended by the CMO and the Ministry of Health; that is, wear your face mask at all times, limit your contact with other individuals... minimize social contact as much as possible, continue to sanitize our hands and wash our hands as often as possible."
The prime minister explained that the NEMAC meeting was called in order for recommendations to be made by the CMO and various ministries, have them be digested over the weekend by the various NEMAC entities and have Cabinet make a final decision on Monday.
The prime minister mentioned that one such recommendation is that more than likely permission would not be given for Jounen Kweyol activities.
