Pollard should bat higher for Mumbai Indians - Gambhir

Kieron Pollard, the captain of the Trinbago Knight Riders, should bat higher for his IPL team the Mumbai Indians, says Gautam Gambhir

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has criticized the Mumbai Indians’ use of Kieron Pollard in their five-wicket loss to the Chennai Super Kings on Saturday, in the opening game of the 2020 IPL at Abu Dhabi.

Pollard batted at number 6, coming in at the fall of Saurabh Tiwary’s wicket off the first ball of the 15th over.

"I was a bit surprised that they (Mumbai Indians) did not push Pollard up to number 4 or 5. Having him at number 6 is a bit low considering the kind of form he has shown in the CPL. Bad management from Mahela Jayawardena and Rohit Sharma. You want to use someone like Pollard well,” said Gambhir during an interview with ESPNCricinfo.

Pollard hit 18 off 14 balls and was dismissed in the 18th over, and Gambhir said Pollard’s form in the Hero Caribbean Premier League should have been better used.

“It is absolutely bad thinking. You know that Hardik (Pandiya) hasn’t played a lot of cricket. Saurabh Tiwary hasn't played a lot of cricket. Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, all of these guys have not. The only guy who has played some kind of cricket is Pollard, who will use his form,” Gambhir added.

The former India opener believes that Pollard should bat higher in the Mumbai Indian’s line-up.

“What number should Pollard bat? In this batting line-up, I think not later than number 5. Pollard is someone who is in form and they pushed him too deep in the batting order,” he said.

Mumbai are up against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday at Abu Dhabi.
