SLP: UWP Misleading People on Banana Exports

The SLP issued a release today taking the UWP to task over banana export figures:

"The United Workers Party since assuming office in June of 2016 continues to deliberately provide false and misleading information to the public in an attempt to hide their obvious failing policies.

During the week of January 20th 2018, the minister for Agriculture stated that exports of bananas to the United Kingdom increased by 200% in 2017 over 2016. He said quote “I am talking about the UK market, -whilst we have not accomplished the 300% - but we are seeing at least 200% increase in 2017 compared to 2016”.

According to Hon. Moses Jn. Baptiste, former Minister for Agriculture, the information obtained from reliable sources for banana export figures both in Saint Lucia and the United Kingdom indicate that the Ministers statement is false and is calling on the Minister for Agriculture Hon. Ezekiel Joseph to provide the export figures for bananas to the United Kingdom which shows a 200% increase in exports for 2017 over 2016.

Hon. Moses Jn. Baptiste says that while all industry concerns would benefit if Saint Lucia records a 200% increase in banana exports to the UK, the Minister is responsible for a sector which depends heavily on correct policy directions and announcements by the Minister. Any statement from the Minister must therefore be factual."
