Soleil Summer Festival appeals to range of tastes

The Roots and Soul Festival is the second of several cultural and artistic events under Soleil, the Saint Lucia Summer Festival, that spans the months of May to November.

The two-day Roots and Soul Festival will be staged at the Pigeon Island National Landmark targeting lovers of reggae, hip-hop, Afropunk and R&B.

Chief Executive Officer of Events Saint Lucia Inc., Thomas Leonce, disclosed the line-up for the June festival.

“We have on Saturday, Forth World Band, Christopher Martin who is the headline act, and Crissy featuring Dynamics Band.

“On Sunday Etana headlines, we have Musiq Soulchild, and we also have Kayo performing, so quite a lot of local acts will be performing for the Roots and Soul Festival, supporting our international artistes. Rob Zii Taylor and Finesse will be there as well. We are leaving space for fringe events, so private promoters in the same format as has been done for jazz, in the week leading up to the festival can stage their own events.”

The summer festival series of events, Mr Leonce said, are designed to attract varied audiences locally, regionally, and internationally.

“The jazz festival appeals to the African American visitor or African American person living in the US primarily, sourcing mainly from the northeast United States, which is a traditional market for Saint Lucia. The Roots and Soul festival will be more appealing to the region. The French Caribbean people, although most of the reggae songs are sung in English, have a love for reggae. Carnival appeals to the diaspora, the Saint Lucian diaspora in the US. The Food and Rum Festival will appeal to persons who want to come for a culinary experience, so it varies.”

More information about the Roots and Soul Festival and Soleil can be found at www.stlucia.org. Tickets to the Roots and Soul festival cost EC$100, and can also be purchased for the early bird price of EC$75.

The Roots and Soul festival is slated for June 17 and 18.
