NFL player Logan Ryan and his wife Ashley had an unexpected encounter during their St Lucian wedding in April.

Ryan told the story on a caption to the above photo from his Instagram account:

While taking some wedding photos in the St.Lucian town of Soufriere we ran into this stray dog and many others like her. This one in particular followed us thru the streets for 20 plus minutes. When we flew back to the states we were determined to help any way possible. We donated & We encouraged all friends and family that instead giving us wedding gifts to make donations to @helpaws, a St.Lucian based dog rescue. Just got word back that based on our picture they found this particular mama dog, named her Logan, and the donation paid for her Spay!!#MadeOurDay#DogRescue

This is in keeping with the couple's efforts in their homeland, where they founded Ryan’s Monthly Rescue, a social media effort that seeks to find homes for dogs, especially pitbulls.

Ryan told The Dodo, "Dog rescue is with us wherever we go, it's just something we're passionate about and want to make a difference in any way we can."

For Ashley, "Our love of dogs may have been the only thing missing from our big day... the fact that we connected with HelpAWS and helped this one particular dog made the entire experience even more unforgettable."

Per their website, HelpAWS, "stands for Help Animal Welfare in Saint Lucia and at Helpaws we believe that every animal has the right to be healthy, happy, and free from abuse, neglect, and cruelty. So far we have helped over 1,200 animals find the care they need by rescuing those in need and providing free spay and neuter clinics every 6 months. We have also successfully found forever homes for over 200 rescued animals!"

The wedding gift donations have assisted HelpAWS in its spaying and neutering efforts. The stray named after Logan is being treated for health issues and will be put up for adoption.
