St Lucia experiences island-wide power outage

Saint Lucia experienced a massive power failure island-wide around 8.30 am Tuesday, January 21, 2020.

The cause of the blackout is currently under investigation by LUCELEC authorities.

“We are working to restore the system as quickly as possible. We do apologize for any inconvenience to our customers and the general public and thank you for your patience at this time,” a company official said.

According to LUCELEC sources, an issue with a connection leading to one of LUCELEC’s main transformers at the company’s Cul De Sac substation is the main cause for the blackout.

The importance of electricity as an integral part of the business sector is being highlighted following Tuesday morning’s blackout, as a number of business entities do not have a backup generator.

The last time the island experienced a total electrical system shutdown was on September 4, 2019, at 12.37 am which was caused by a major internal fault at LUCELEC’s Cul De Sac power station.

Power restoration began at 2.25 pm and was completed at 3.20 pm.

Several businesses suffered great financial loses because of the island-wide power loss.
