St Lucia records first suicide for 2020
Relatives and close friends of a male individual who took his life Friday say they were 'shocked but not surprised' upon receiving the heartbreaking news.
Officers of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force responded to a report of a suspected suicide at East Winds on Friday, January 10, 2020.
According to a relative who spoke on condition of anonymity: “He called a friend telling him that he drank something to take his life. The person then informed the landlord and the police and when they got to the house, he was already dead.”
A close friend of the victim said the incident came as no surprise and noted the victim was depressed and stressed.
“A number of factors contributed, mostly relationship and finance.
“I recalled going to check him at his home and when I arrived he told me he drank an entire bottle of Black & White Whiskey. I tell him 'gassa you need to cool out',” a friend of the deceased noted.
According to suicide prevention site SAVE.org, warning signs include talking about wanting to die or to kill oneself, looking for a way to kill oneself, and increasing the use of alcohol or drugs.
Saint Lucia recorded nearly a dozen suicides in 2019.
