Superwoman Lilly Singh comes out as bisexual, says it's her superpower

YouTuber Lilly Singh has come out as bisexual in a tweet that celebrates her sexuality, race, and gender.

On Sunday, she tweeted: "Female, coloured, bisexual" to her almost 5.74 million Twitter followers.

"Throughout my life these have proven to be obstacles from time to time. But now I'm fully embracing them as my superpowers. No matter how many 'boxes' you check, I encourage you to do the same," she wrote.

With nearly 15 million subscribers to her YouTube channel, she has been receiving an outpouring of support, especially from the South Asian community.

"In the South Asian community, there's a hesitancy for women to take ownership of their sexuality in the way Lilly has done," said one fan, Afshan D'souza-Lodhi, who is South Asian and bisexual. "She's hit a level of success and it's amazing news to have her come out like that."

Afshan says there is a lack of LGBT role models in South Asian culture, which is why so many people have welcomed Lilly's announcement.

Lilly has been tweeting about her support for the LGBT community for many years (along with creating YouTube videos on LGBT issues), sharing her support for gay pride events and gay marriage long before she came out.

Since she announced her sexual orientation, the tweet has got over 8,000 re-tweets and more than 72,000 likes.

Overwhelmed by the response, she tweeted, “Thank you so much for the love and positivity. Words can’t describe how much it means. I appreciate you all. Group hug.”

Lilly has over 14 million followers on YouTube. She has authored the bestseller, “How To Be A Bawse”, has a role in HBO’s film adaptation of Fahrenheit 451 and in 2017, she topped the Forbes Magazine Top Influencers List in the entertainment category. She has emerged as one of the most popular stars on YouTube.
