The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Physical Planning, Natural Resources and Cooperatives has confirmed that there is increased interest in Saint Lucia's banana exports.
“Within discussions with the CEO of Winfresh, he told me that he has signed contracts for this year and interestingly, there are provisions for more exports of our bananas to the UK," Minister Ezechiel Joseph said.
The diligence of banana farmers and their tireless work, has resulted in a positive outcome, he added.
“You are aware of the opportunities that we were able to open up on the French market. We should have started exporting in excess of 3000 boxes a week to France, but we had to hold back due to the situation with Matthew. But the farmers are very committed. Right now one of the aid programs that we have [implemented] due to the situation caused by Matthew targets drainage; but because of the kind of weather we have been experiencing my technical staff has told me that it is very difficult to get out there to start clearing up. This results in a very conducive environment for Black Sigatoka, but not withstanding, the farmers have shown that they are very committed."
Minister Joseph stressed that although Tropical Storm Matthew created several setbacks for banana farmers, there remains light at the end of the tunnel.
