BCF prisoners have to sleep on mattresses they burned - Francis
National Security Minister, Senator Hermangild Francis says government cannot afford to replace mattresses for inmates at the Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF).
"We do not have the financial resources to replace those mattresses. They will have to use the burnt mattresses until we are in a position to replace them. It is not a priority now," Francis declared.
Several inmates torched their mattresses on Sunday, March 23, 2020, following a total lockdown of the facility.
As a result of their rebellious actions, the burnt mattresses will not be replaced anytime soon, which Francis says forms part of their punishment.
The lockdown followed a prison break where two prisoners successfully escaped the facility.
"That would not have burned down the facility... the prison officers acted quickly and were able to diffuse the situation," Francis said.
Dave Joseph and Markin Marquis escaped the BCF on Saturday.
Joseph was caught one day later but Marquis remained on the run.
Marquis was subsequently shot and killed by law enforcement on Wednesday evening.
According to reports, he was shot in his attempt to flee the island.
