We had to take an intermission; hope you missed the series. This week, we present the final two creations of the Cheek to Cheek Avant-Garde Make-up series.

In this instalment, we spotlight make-up artiste Micha Bucknor, a colour fanatic who’s eager to inspire through her artistry.

What comes to mind when you think of Jamaican Avant-Garde?

Bucknor’s idea of avant-garde make-up involves a displacement from the norm, and injecting unexpected bursts of energy into her work.

And, there’s a bonus; Bucknor shared the steps to achieve the eye-catching neon look.

Prep and PRIME

First thing’s first, skin prep; flawless make-up starts with a great base. I used L’Oréal Micellar Cleansing Water Complete Cleanser to cleanse and prepare the skin for product; then went in with the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer.

I went with the La Girl brown liner to lightly fill in the brows and applied the Juvia’s Place I Am Magic Concealer, 11, which I also used as a base for eye-shadow.

For the eyes I blended a bit of Juvia’s Place Zulu Eyeshadow Palette and Yardie Cosmetics Island Gyal Eyeshadow Palette (always support black-owned and local businesses!)

Then I started blending the colours together; blending is key. I also lined the lids with the Moon Glow Blacklight Neon Eye-liner for a pop.

Face Base

To create the base, I used L’Oréal True Match Super-Blendable Liquid Foundation in C7 for Leanne’s foundation and Juvia’s Place concealer to highlight and contour in the darker shade 11 and lighter shade 8.

I also used the L’Oréal True Match Super-Blendable Powder in C7 to set her face and the Juvia’s Place I am Magic setting powder for the under eyes.

This was followed by grazing the cheeks with Juvia’s Place The Saharan Blush Palette Vol II blush palette.

Finish with Freckles

I created freckles using the Moon Glow neon liners and blotted the centre of her lips with Mac Ruby Woo for a puckered look. I then added two strips of mink lashes, and voila!

LL (Loop Lifestyle): What inspired the look, and why?

MB (Micha Bucknor): I was inspired by the bird of paradise flower…its explosion of colour that is intrinsically Caribbean. The bright yellow and orange, the deep ocean blue fading to fun Fuchsia; the flower screams Tropics.

The meaning of the flower is ‘joy and paradise’ and with everything going on in the world right now I believe both are synonymous with Jamaica.

The coloured freckles were a fun artistic addition.

LL: Describe your idea of Jamaican Avant-garde.

MB: By definition Avant-Garde is ‘new and experimental ideas and methods’ and for art in Jamaica, just stepping out of the box and away from the traditional norm, creating things that aren’t ‘expected’.

I wanted to do a colourful look but decided to step away from glitters and gems usually associated with Jamaica and carnival.

Make-up for me is a form of expression: my moods and emotions.

Sometimes dark and gothic, sometimes light and cheerful; art created through this process is Avant-Garde for me – just letting the creativity flow.

Bucknor's top four tools of the trade are...

Pencils: A great brow product (my current fave is Absolute New York Super Slim Brow Pencil, Smoke)

Concealer: A few swipes and you can look like you woke up like that Beyoncé.

Lip treatment: Chapped lips aren’t cute on anyone.

Lashes: I feel naked without them.

LL: List two make-up artists that you follow incessantly.

MB: This is hard! There are so many to be honest; for knowledge of products and the business behind make-up Angie Di Battista.

For inspiration, @mmmmitchell, @amandizzllee, and @korenarebecca. While, in Jamaica there’s @facekyngdom and @suethemakeupgirl.

Bucknor’s go-to eyebrow shades…

- Absolute New York Super Slim Brow Pencil, Smoke

- ColourPop Black N’ Brown Precision Brow Pencil

- Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade, Ebony

…And the five products that she swears by.

- Ben Nye Final Seal Matte Makeup Sealer spray

- Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer

- L’Oréal Infallible Full Wear Concealer

- Coloured Raine’s Cherry Blossom (the BEST red)

- Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Setting Powder

- Tarte Face Tape Foundation

LL: Who/what inspires your art?

MB: I draw inspiration from a few things: how I feel at the time, a colour, a painting I saw somewhere.

Inspiration is everywhere.

Social media right now is a treasure trove of amazing creatives who now have a platform to come together and display their skill, which is amazing.

My dad is an artist and my mother can literally make anything with her hands so art is in my blood.

LL: What's your make-up pet peeve?

MB: Honestly, all around I’m blessed to be able to earn from my passion, the only thing that gets to me is being rushed.

Make-up is a process and it’s art, I think artists that promise a full face in 15 minutes are giving clients unrealistic expectations.

Yes, it’s possible for some but at the same time I don’t think the Mona Lisa was painted in minutes.

LL: What is your legacy?

MB: I hope my legacy, not just through my art but through knowing me, is to never give up. Everything you put your mind to is achievable. We all have the power to manifest greatness. And I hope when you see my work, you’re inspired to do the same.
