COVID-19 back to school checklist

Undoubtedly the COVID-19 pandemic has brought a cloud of uncertainty to educational institutions in Saint Lucia regarding the 2020/2021 academic year.

While many schools will be reopening their doors come September, we need to find the best ways to arm our kids for the safest experience possible. No single strategy offers 100% protection from the virus, but when combined, they provide the most effective way to minimize risk of exposure and slow the spread of COVID-19.

Here are some thoughts:

  1. Do not send your kids to school sick – The first thing you should do is ensure that your child has no symptoms of illness. Make it a routine to check their temperature in the morning and ensure they don’t have a cough or any signs of a cold. If your child has a fever, keep them home.

  1. Ensure kids have their own school supplies – Every child should have their own supplies such as rulers, pencils, erasers, sharpeners to avoid sharing and reduce the spread of the virus.

  1. Pack hand sanitizer -  Pack a bottle of hand sanitizer for your child and encourage them to sanitize their hands regularly especially after taking the bus or touching surfaces.

  1. Provide your child with a face mask – Keep one or two spare masks in your child’s bag just in case they misplace, destroy or get the mask dirty. Speak to your child about the importance of wearing a mask and have them practice wearing it at home so come September they will have minimal difficulty keeping it on.

  1. Disinfecting wipes -  Keep a pack in your child’s bag and get them in the habit of disinfecting their desks and chairs when they get to school on mornings.

Stay positive. Create a ‘return home’ sanitization routine for children to ensure your home does not get contaminated.

There are already guidelines in place at the schools to help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus such as social distancing markers, sanitization and temperature checks.

Educate yourself and your children on how to stop the spread of the virus.
