No date in sight for reopening of St Lucia's cruise sector
It appears there is no definitive date for the reopening of cruise lines.
That's according to the island’s Tourism Minister, Dominic Fedee.
The cruise industry came to a standstill in the first quarter of 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic which spread quickly among crew and passengers.
However, while small boat charters have been given authorization to operate, the same can't be said about the cruise lines.
"We are having conversations on a CARICOM level to see when the Caribbean will be ready, what protocols that will be needed, when is the best time for it to take place and whether the world itself is in fact ready for that to happen, so there has been no decision made yet on returning to cruise tourism," Minister Fedee explained.
The move, he said, comes with a lot of risks: "Were not definitive as yet."
In 2018, Saint Lucia recorded its best visitor arrivals, with cruising up by 13.6 per cent.
