SLU pushing for US State Dept to change 'Reconsider Travel' warning
The Government of Saint Lucia continues to work with the United States on Saint Lucia’s travel level designation.
While the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently upgraded St Lucia's advisory to low risk, the United States State Department's advisory still remains at Level 3, encouraging citizens to reconsider travel to St Lucia.
The Office of the Prime Minister issued a release on the matter saying:
"The Government of Saint Lucia welcomes the recent Centers for Disease Control (CDC) upgrading of our country to Level 1 (Low COVID-19 Risk). This is a credit to the protocols that were put in place to address the pandemic, the leadership of the Prime Minister, the Cabinet of Ministers, the Ministry of Health, the Chief Medical Officer and all Saint Lucians who continue to adhere to the protocols.
Speaking about the recent CDC upgrade, Saint Lucia’s Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Anton E. Edmunds, stated: “While we have not yet seen a shift in the United States Department of State’s own travel advisory, we note that this agency has itself acknowledged the CDC’s update on Saint Lucia on its website,”
“Recognizing that the CDC report is but one input that informs the State Department’s travel advisories, we are continuing to engage the relevant authorities, advising and updating them on the protocols that we believe position Saint Lucia as a location where safety is a priority of the Government - for our citizens and theirs”, he concluded.
Prime Minister Honourable Allen Chastanet also continues to advocate on Saint Lucia’s behalf and has been a champion on the matter of pre-testing for travellers to Saint Lucia and the wider Caribbean.
The Prime Minister noted that the success the country has experienced in the management of COVID-19 is in large part due to the cooperation of the population and the hard work of the team at the Ministry of Health.
The Prime Minister cautioned: “This news is great news for us as a nation and more proof that we must remain committed to learning to live with COVID-19, adopting new habits and not becoming complacent.”
